A while back, we were in the drive-thru at a little burger place. My youngest noticed that his sister was buying herself an ice cream cone with her own money—and immediately, he wanted one too. “Can I get ice cream?” he begged, his voice rising. When I said no, the tears came fast. “That’s not fair!” he cried loudly from the backseat. And right there, sitting in that car line, I had a choice. I could’ve bought the ice cream just to make him happy. But I’ve learned—it’s not my job to always keep my child happy. If I rescue him from every disappointment, I don’t build the resilience muscle he’ll need later in life. And you know what?
